Mission statement
Lumikko wants to foster remote sensing applications in order to contribute to a better world.
Vision
Lumikko believes that with a better and more sophisticated usage of remote sensing data solutions can be provided that contribute to a safer and healthier world.
SERvices
The SaaS-platform that we are developing is providing our customers information in maps about flood monitoring and prediction. The data is (mostly) based on open source information, but the analysis based on calculations in specific models give the accurate maps only we can provide.
We use meteorological data that are historically data from the past. Next to that we use remote sensing data. Remote sensing data is either gained by satellite or by plane. We use only satellite data using optical and radar images. Radar provides for data where this would be impossible with optical observations.
Our data are coming from the Sentinel satellite as part of Copernicus satellites of ESA. Europe is covered every 6 days. The rest of the world is covered every 12 days. Copernicus’ pixel seize is 12x12 meters. Data and analysis can be provided on that level.
Our software compares the images and makes clear what has changed. These analyses, using specific and unique models, is the added value of our services. It assesses based on certain factors the risk of flood risk and to what extent that risk occurs. The outcomes of those analysis are then plotted on maps that give our customers.
Risk of flooding changes every year, because it is mainly a result of rain fall. However, using the right data and models can give to a certain extent accurate prediction about flooding. The change in climate makes that the risk for flooding is there now in regions where it has not been before.
Maps based on only historical data have become outdated due to climate chances and (other) impact of human behavior like erosion and change of the vegetation cover. Including the type of surface those three aspects can easily be monitored by satellite images and processed by our analysis.
On the maps in our SaaS-platform contours are lines that shows constant value if the space inside of it including the line. Polygons shades are plotted on that map for areas with the same value as outcome of the analysis. The polygons are mostly divided in small blocks using triangulations.
We use several types of base layers that can be combined with several types of top layers. The base layers are some open source and others paid services we use. The top layers are the result of our unique analysis giving our customers the best insights they can get on flood predictions. The customer chooses both the top layer and the base layer it wants to use to get the information that it would like to have.
